Yes, very good point. I'd imagine that's more common with less widely spoken languages. I think it helps to have a least one person who willing to be very realistic with you about your speaking (and writing, etc.) abilities. Failing that, there's usually the option of taking a standardized test. In any case, as you say, it's something to be aware of so you don't become complacent with a relatively low level.

Something that I think should be mentioned is the opposite of your French "cool reception" example. In some countries (in my case, Japan) the native speakers will be blown away just for knowing one or two words in their language. This can be encouraging when starting out with the language but incredibly dangerous later on. You may get the impression of being much more fluent than you actually are.

Hope these tips help, Lindsay. I’m not a naturally outgoing person, so I know how intimidating it can be to try to speak when you feel like you talk like an 18-month-old. It takes some time, but keep working at it and you can reach the point where you can speak freely.

Thank you so much for your tips! I'm definitely going to try these. I've been trying to learn Dutch for awhile, but I get so nervous and just clam up and forget everything when trying to communicate with a native speaker.
